About Marte Meo

In everyday life, there are many opportunities to support the development of children. In Marte Meo, we make these moments visible opportunities to give children a ‘golden gift’ they will benefit from their entire life. With Marte Meo, you will find information to help you improve the quality of everyday moments of interaction.

For more than 40 years, I have developed Marte Meo as a method to encourage people to use everyday moments to develop their own potential, at their own pace and on their own strength.

My experience has taught me that it is the quality of daily interactions which support development and provide opportunities for personal growth and well-being.  The central focus of the Marte Meo method is to recognise and highlight these opportunities, which helps people use them to improve the quality of their lives.

Marte Meo is a video-based method for providing information about how to support development in daily interactions.  It provides parents, relatives and professionals with detailed and practical information to support children, adolescents and adults through important developmental steps. This information is obtained from short video clips of their everyday interactions.

Through my years of collaboration with parents, I have learned that parents and caregivers need, above all, understandable and useable information on supporting children in their development in the best possible way.

When professionals use Marte Meo developmental support information in their daily work (e.g. schools, therapy, day care) and are then able to share this with parents, something important happens.  Parents can then use this information at home in everyday family interactions, which gives the child the best chance in life.

This understanding resulted in the ‘Marte Meo Parent Invitation Programme’.

In the training of professionals, it has always been important to me that there is enough flexibility within the Marte Meo training systems for the participant’s own personality and individual expertise. The basic Marte Meo information is always the same: very clear and concrete, even if used differently by diverse professionals.

“Seeing is believing!” Video recordings are always used to check whether Marte Meo information is used successfully. This also works as a quality control tool for the Marte Meo method.

Over the last 30 years, Marte Meo has developed into a wide reaching and diverse international network.  Professionals from all over the world from different backgrounds, cultures and disciplines, are part of a constant, intensive exchange. They inspire each other. This collaboration is further developed in joint meetings at the international training centre in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Master Classes with supervisors all over the world allow me to learn about their Marte Meo projects and current developments.  I can then share information about innovative international developments with supervisors.
