A workshop for building social connections through natural everyday interaction

Where: Northern Territory, Museum & Art, Gallery theatre | Darwin

When:
Mon 20th May 2013 | Day 1: Introduction to Marte Meo Model
Tues 21st May 2013 | Day 2: More specific local content with video presented from participants.

Carpentaria Disability Services are very excited to host the first Marte Meo workshop in Darwin. This has been a much anticipated event and it is such a wonderful opportunity to see the founder of the program, MARIA AARTS, in our home town of Darwin.
This course is run regularly in Adelaide if you wish to seek further certification after attending the basic training in Darwin. We understand the financial burden of attending professional development interstate therefore we have aimed to bring this event to the wider territory audience at the lowest possible cost.
Both days: AU$150 (Early bird!) / $300

Presenter MARIA AARTS is an extremely dynamic and engaging presenter that is the founder of Marte Meo International. She has extensive experience working with a diverse range of professionals, parents and carers. The delivery of the course is very visual with lots of video and story telling. It can be integrated into current work areas in its introductory form, or higher levels of training can be gained to become a certified practitioner in the model.

[Cairns, 4-7-2012] Venue: Harbour Side Location Cairns. Event: Unexpectedly balmy evening!

Maria and her husband Hans having diner at Tha Fish at the beach in Cairns had a big surprise! Sitting at the table at Tha Fish Maria, having just arrived from Sydney, shouts suddenly: »That's Greg!« Looking outside the window she immediately saw Michael too.

Greg Antcliff (Senior manager research to practice) and Michael Tizard (State manager Queensland), both of Benevolent Society (www.bensoc.org.au), walked along the promenade of the pier. All unexpected. So you can imagine the surprised faces of everybody. Maria and Greg & Michael had a nice wine at full moon, talking business and reminiscing about old times.
It surely was a balmly evening!

Greg first met Maria in Eindhoven (2007, The Netherlands) and brought her to Sydney and Brisbane soon after, and then ran into her in Cairns.
And now we are in tropical North Queensland. Completely unplanned, but a lovely surprise!

Liebe Maria, lieber Herr Juul, lieber Herr Prof. Dr. Hüther!!!

No Dog - No Swim

[Adelaide/Glenelg, 17-07-2012] »No hat, no play«. Meant here is that children at school are not allowed to play outside without a hat on, because of the sun.
Australians really know how to make a phrase compact and say it all in just a few words.

During the AAIMHI-days this week in Adelaide/Glenelg participants from all over Australia were welcomed. Three participants from Darwin, Gabrielle Kelly, Kelly Treggalles and Andy Ewers (all from from »Carpentaria Disability Services«), knew Maria wasn’t easy to move to Darwin in Australians Northern Territory. So they decided to travel from Darwin to Adelaide to hear Maria during the 3 AAIMHI-days in Glenelg, at the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club, right on a wonderful beach. By car at least a 3000 kilometres drive! Not only wanted they to hear Maria presenting and supervising the Marte Meo subjects, but they had in mind to ease her coming to Darwin.
Maria said: »But Darwin is famous for the habitation of the most dangerous animals of the world. And it should be very hot over there.”
Gabrielle, Kelly and Andy: »So you should come over during Southern Winter. Then the temperature will be a nice 30 degrees.«
Maria: »And can you swim in the ocean than?«
The ladies: »Of course you can. Just beware of crocodiles.«
Maria: »Crocodiles…!!!!!«
The ladies: »We will protect you for everything in Darwin, even crocodiles. And swimming is quite easy to check. Send in your dog and watch what’s happening. No dog – no swim!!!«
Everybody had a good laugh; Maria was talked into a visit to Darwin Winter next year, after checking again that three ladies would protect her.

Introduction Spider Man in Sydney: It's a bird…

[Sydney, 29-06-2012] What a surprise leaving my apartment at Kent Street, Sydney,  this morning, to run into the complete bundle of American comics: Spider woman, Spider man, Batman and more.
They all like to be on the picture with me down at Meriton’s lounge and puzzled I step up to my work at KU Children’s Services today. My husband accompanies me on the way, certainly no Superman or Batman, and the road to KU was totally safe I can assure you of that.

The »9 News« (evening edition) ran:

Sydney a star as Superman Returns
Superman Returns (in Australia), one of the most expensive films ever made, has had its first screening in the United States and Australia has emerged as one of its stars.

And I just ran into the promotion set of that…

Sydney surely is a miraculous city…

[Note: It’s A Bird... It’s A Plane... It’s Superman, is a musical with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams, with a book by David Newman and Robert Benton. It is based on the comic book character Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.]

Four Swedish School Leaders

[Haslum, 13-5-2012] We received from Sissel Holten the following mail concerning certification of 4 Swedish school leaders:

Hello Maria,

At the Marte Meo Nordic Congress, Nyborg (Denmark, 1/3-5-2012) I promised to send you some words about my four Swedish school leaders who I've been training for two years now. They all received their Marte Certification during the latest Marte Meo Nordic Congress.

They find Marte Meo a very good help during their work as leaders, because they learn to see the teacher in an exact way by means of the films. Marte Meo also give them a good opportunity to help the

help the teachers with the leading skills at their classroom and so being more aware of the power of good relations with their pupils during teaching.
By the way: Your website is very informing! I tell everyone to take a look so they can be inspired!

Marte Meo: Developing Competency - In Children's ...

[Kristiansand, 2-2-2012] Rolf Rohde, Kristiansand, Norway, wrote us:
»Marte Meo As Part Of Developing Competency - In The Best Interest Of Children«
A network project between Western Balkan children’s homes and the University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway, grounded upon the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The University of Agder was awarded the financial resources necessary to fund a three-year competency-raising project in the Western Balkans. These funds were provided by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under a program entitled: »Peace, Reconciliation and Democracy in the Western Balkans.«

The project aims to contribute to the establishment of a network between children’s homes. It also aims at raising staff competency levels in order to provide high-quality child care. Work is being completed to achieve these goals through organizational and sustainable staff development.
As a part of this program a groups of selected child care workers has been chosen to participate in the Marte Meo Practitioner education. Each children’s homes was provided a film camera and two colleagues from the same place film each other in daily interaction with children. When we meet for a two days seminar we give feedback on the films. We analyze the films together with the participants and underline the parts containing supportive interactions. The model and way of working in this program has been developed adjusted to local context and in accordance with the standards of Marte Meo International procedures.
The network of children’s homes is from Split in Croatia, Beograd and Uzice in Serbia, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Sarajevo in Bosnia Herzegovina, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Skopje in Macedonia. Until now we have had seminar days in Split and Sarajevo. In May 2012, we will meet in Beograd. In this way of traveling about in the West-Baltic countries we also learn to know and experience the culture and the way of living and upbringing in this part of Europe. The sixteen participants, being children’s nurses as well as psychologists and pedagogues, find it stimulating and challenging to take part in the interaction analyzes.
Traveling the Balkan regions we clearly saw, like one of them said, »the emotional hunger of the child« and the »desire for contact«. Another participant stated: »Now I have been working in this children’s home for so many years, and by working in this way, I have found the enthusiasm I had when I started.«
We as instructors, also see how the candidates achieve new skills in daily interaction moments as they with their children.

»A Spoonful Of Food - A Spoonful Of Love«

[Kristiansand, 1-2-2012] Rolf Rohde (Marte Meo, Kristiansand, Norway) wrote us:

»A Spoonful Of Food - A Spoonful Of Love«
Marte Meo in nursing of orphan infants at Haydom Lutheran Hospital in Tanzania.

Orphan infants in Mbulu and Hanang districts in Northern Tanzania spend their first months in life at the Child Care Unit (CCU) at Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH). These vulnerable children are fed and nursed, but get very little emotional and social support. Can Marte Meo offer nurses and assistants at CCU additional the support they need?
This question may become the start of a post doc project conducted by PhD, Marte Meo Therapist Kari Vik and Family Therapist, Marte Meo Licensed Supervisor, Rolf Rohde. We have directly borrowed (or stolen) the beautiful saying of MariaAarts often used, when she’s analysing interaction on film. Looking stepby step for contact moments Maria often says that a child needs »a spoonful of food and a spoonful of love«.
Visiting Haydom (Tanzania) it was clear that our work supplementary needed some knowledge regarding some conditions of cultural and social codes. What are the contents of love, attachment and developmental support in contextual circumstances as we observed them at CCU? So far we think there might be a good possibility of fruitful collaboration. We’re working in between on finding the right administrative routines and a local anchoring. As soon as a working model for this concept has been developed, we will decide the frequency in visiting Tanzania and decide on the duration of the project. So far the preliminary investigations gave us some rough notions; we work on the protocols and at the same time we also still ask a lot of questions, for instance like: Since 2009 orphan infants in the catchment area of HLH are nursed at a special CCU unit. In daily care the orphans get their basic needs such as rest, sleep, food and vaccinations. However, there is little time for the staff to provide the emotional and social support that these orphan infants need to become more resilient. If the Marte Meo Method could be offered to these child nurses and assistants at CCU, followed by research on the working mechanisms of such an intervention, it probably would be possible to make clear if this method can be useful in improving the relation between the nurses/assistants and the infants, and thus the Marte Meo Method might contributes to facilitating a vigorous mental health development as well as enhance the quality of attachment for the babies. Moreover, they will probably be more capable of establishing a secure attachment to their father and family of origin, when they are brought to them or other caretakers when they are dismissed from the CCU.
Therefore we want to examine the Marte Meo Method offered to child nurses and assistants at CCU in order to establish whether this method can be useful, and thus contribute in facilitating a vigorous mental health that can be administrated at a low threshold in the public health system. Furthermore, the results will be important in deciding whether there are any universal working mechanisms of the Marte Meo Method.

What Occupational Therapists Say About Marte Meo

[English translation will follow a.s.a.p.]

Ergotherapeutinnen, tätig in eigener Praxis; Schwerpunkt: Pädiatrie

[Vienna, 19-12-2012] Patricia Eisner, Österreich, transkripierte einige Zitaten »ihrer« Marte Meo Therapeuten.

Helga (Ergotherapeutin):
